When do you read?

“When do you read?” My work friend asked me that today and even though I answered right away – my answer was “mostly early in the morning before the day begins” – her question got me thinking because that isn’t always true. So I lied a little even though I didn’t mean to.

Lately I’ve been sleeping longer than usual, so when I do get up I have to hit the ground running. I have a little pocket of time after the kids go to school, but sometimes that gets eaten up by boring but necessary chores.

But I do my best reading in the morning and can concentrate when the house is quiet. It’s my favorite time of the day and the perfect time to start a new book.

This summer everything will change with a full (and happy) house and different schedules, including the one where I make my group sign up for a shower time. But the younger kids won’t be getting up at 5:30 and 6:00 like they do all school year to catch the bus, so my reading time is about to get better!

Although I do my best reading in the morning, once I get rolling with a book, I can read it at any time in the day and that’s what I do. Sometimes I read standing up in the kitchen while I’m waiting for someone or something. Sometimes I catch a few pages while I’m sitting in the car, also waiting. I don’t like reading in public though, because I like to hide my geeky habit of writing down characters’ names and taking notes. Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not writing a thesis. I do it because I can’t remember things unless they’re written on paper.

Unless I’m extra peppy at night, I can’t read past a certain time. I’ve always been this way and it comforts me now that I’m getting older. I tell people this when they point out that I’m not as young as I used to be. So the memory thing, that’s age related, but the falling asleep thing, that’s just who I am!

Tomorrow morning I’m starting a new book my book club friend gave me last night. It’s called Her by Harriet Lane and I’m determined to pop out of bed as soon as my alarm goes off!

When do you read?

Many thanks to S. and K. for inspiring this post!

  1. My mornings are for writing, so I read for an hour or so before I go to bed, in waiting rooms, in the car (when I’m not driving!), and occasionally in the evenings – I love reading. My like and writing gets in the way!

    1. I do think morning is the most productive time of the day for me. When I did the NaNoWriMo I did all my writing early in the morning. So we’re a little bit the same! Thanks for stopping by Noelle. I was thinking about writing a post about the mystery genre, and want to email you and ask you about your books and about the genre in general – would that be alright with you?

  2. Hehe, I’ve landed on the right post now. Three strikes you’re out, right? Well…as my comment on the wrong post mentioned, I read during my lunch hour. It’s my sweet respite. Apparently something I need more of after my brain blip with this comment. 😄

  3. Haha! I thought I was the only one who had brain blips! I like to read during my break at the library too. It’s really hard to work at a library and watch everyone reading and not be able to just sit down with a book. Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Carrie!

  4. I love to read in the morning but can’t bring myself to get up early enough before work. l try to read on weekend mornings though. Mostly I’ll read at night because it’s a great way to fall asleep and sometimes I’ll even dream about a book. I hope you’ll find lots of reading time and great summer reads!

    1. Thanks Sheila – we will have a busy summer but I will have more time to read! I’ve been binge watching Desperate Housewives at night and I often have dreams/nightmares about the ladies on Wisteria Lane!

  5. I read to unwind at the end of my day. Usually in bed, but when I’m hooked on a book, I’ll tote it around with me, and like you, I’ll even read in the kitchen while I’m waiting for the water to boil.

  6. Ugh. Your comment “hit the ground running” hit ME. I know the feeling. I read very slowly because it’s not something I have a lot of time for. And I hate that. I miss reading. I usually read at night, when all the other work is done.

  7. I like to read in bed at night as part of my winding down time. The only problem is that often my book is too exciting, and I end up not getting to sleep until late.

  8. Grr….those chores getting in the way of reading! It just shouldn’t be allowed but I feel equally ‘chased’ by them! I read different things at different times. If I have a chance and am not rushed I like to glance / read the paper…a habit that started school age. Lunchtimes I might catch up on a magazine, such as Mslexia or a writing one. My main reading time is in the evening before sleep, this is always a novel and can range from twenty minutes to hours!! I often regret that latter but sometimes it’s impossible to stop…😀

  9. I usually only have time at the very end of the day, or rather night. But I always have an audio book going in my car, too. Ever since starting on audios a few years back, I get SO much more reading done!

Tell me what you're thinking!
