Everyone makes mistakes and I’ve made many over the years. Misspelling or misreading words can certainly get us into trouble, but they are also good opportunities to laugh at ourselves. Here are my top five:
- I went a long time before I knew how to spell Connecticut correctly: it wasn’t until I was nineteen and got a job in a bank on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. – that’s when the head teller set me straight!
- I always thought the proper way to describe my neighbors in the next house was to say “next store neighbors.”
- When I had my own desktop publishing business, I designed a brochure for a small trust company, with a lighthouse as their logo, and misspelled “Beacon” on the cover.
- Once I took a shower at a summer rental, misread the shampoo label and washed my hair with dog shampoo.
- Recently, when serving applesauce at dinner, I put the shaker of cumin out instead of cinnamon.

My problem is/was the word ‘necessary.’
It’s not easy to keep the spellings straight – the English language has so many arbitrary rules!
Love this. Was the dog shampoo better?
Haha! Not sure – when my mom found out what happened she washed my hair again!
At least you tried to read ‘shampoo!’ I wanted to remove my under-arm hair with ‘No-Hair’ and was wondering why it didn’t work! When my husband asked me if I’m still at it, I told him: “I’ve no idea why the ‘No-Hair” doesn’t work anymore… have tried twice already.” He chuckled and said, “Are you sure you didn’t use toothpaste?” I got mad at him, “I’m not stupid…” – and then I realized he was right.
Well we do the best we can! Thanks for reading, Giselle 🙂
Hi Book Club Mom. I hope you’re well! I struggled for ages with restaurant. Too many vowels! X
Restaurant’s vowels could definitely use some downsizing!
I’m so rubbish at spelling it. I always feel surprised when I get it right.
So many words to keep straight!
Cumin on applesauce…yikes! Was this after you’d bought your bifocals? 🙂
Hi Jill! Definitely pre new glasses. But just to be sure it doesn’t happen again we’ve marked the spice jar!
The cumin one reminds me of a recent one of mine – I wrote in a blog post that my Culinary Queen had flavoured a dish with cardamon – when she poof redd it the morning after publication she pointed out that it should have read cumin.
Haha! I’ve never used cardamon – though I do have some in my cabinet. 😉
I always have to look up the word ‘shenanigans’ before I type it. Love the word, though. 🙂
OMG I use shenanigans all the time – usually spoken, hard to spell for sure! Thanks for stopping by, Wendy!
I am forever befuddled by trying to spell “conscious” and “conscience.” Also, for some reason my brain halts when I have to write out the word “fourteen,” and ponders anew why “four” has a “u” but “forty” does not, so what does “fourteen” have? English is weird.
No logic there – we can only bumble through these words! Thanks for the visit, Jan. 🙂
I’ve made a few doozies.
We can only laugh – I have a habit of unintentionally mixing up first and last names of different people – sometimes funny but most of the time no one knows what the heck I’m talking about!
I love your examples!
My grammar really needs work. I also have a problem mixing words up. I always get the words baklava and Balaklava mixed up. I told my friend that the criminal was wearing gloves and a baklava. She said, “He was wearing a fancy dessert on his face?”. 😉
Haha – I would have made the same mistake! Thanks for reading 🙂
Haha. I’m sure we’ve all done worse — much worse!
Many others in my book of records too! Thanks for reading and commenting, Cynthia 🙂
You are welcome.
Fun Read! We all make mistakes, and we have to laugh about it. I bought dog cookies that looked so good, I had to stop several people from eating them…including my husband!
Well I’d go for anything that looks like a cookie!
My spelling is atrocious so there are too many things to list for that one! But I actually use Mane and Tail shampoo as my regular shampoo even though its meant for horses 😂😂 you can buy it in the pet section at Walmart and it has directions on the back for horses, dogs and people 😂 I know its weird but it works really well!
I feel better! Thanks!
Oh my, some of those mistakes are funny! I too was guilty of “next store” thinking. 😊
How did you misspell Beacon?
Hi Jennifer – I spelled it Baecon! I’m glad to know that I have another “next store” friend! Thanks for reading and commenting – sorry for the delayed reply. 🙂
No worries! 😊
Very entertaining, Barbara, for a chronically bad speller like me. I don’t make funny mistakes like yours, I make hugely embarrassing ones.
Thank for your candor, Barbara. Where do I even start with my mistakes?! I definitely mix up song lyrics and get some odd results. My family loves to point these out. I am sure specific examples will come to me in the middle of the night:)
Oh I know – song lyric mix-ups are right up there in my mistakes – those are the fun ones. As for remembering in the middle of the night, that would be me 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
