On virtual book hauling

So last week I went to a virtual conference sponsored by Library Journal. I attended in a webinar on Editors’ Picks and got a chance to learn about a lot of new books coming out. I didn’t know what to expect, but I have to tell you it was a lot of fun visiting all of the publishers’ virtual booths and seeing so many new books!

I also came away with a lot of ARCs, many via NetGalley and some PDFs. All titles will be released this summer, into the fall and a couple in 2021.

I’m looking forward to reading these books, despite the problem of already having too many books in my pile.

Here’s what I got and hope to read this summer:

Waiting approval, but I got a special NetGalley widget from Library Journal so I think they’re a go.

  1. One thing I’ve always missed about being first in Special Libraries and then in Academic, you don’t get a lot of fun freebies at conferences beyond the corporate-logo-ed toy of the year! You got a great haul! Sweet Sorrow is one I’m looing forward to. I’ll look forward to your reviews as you read these in the coming year(s).

  2. I can’t wait to read your reviews of these books! I find the covers interesting – do they tell the story of a “light” read or a “heavy” read? A lot of ‘blue’ in these covers (drama?) , or black/red (which indicates they might be too dark for me.) I’m reading The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. Have you read this one? Highly recommended and I’m still trying to decide if I like it (halfway in). Very different from The City of Girls, the last Gilbert book I read….

    1. Hi Pam. I’m excited to read them. Just how I will fit them in will be interesting, though! I’ve only read Eat Pray Love, which I actually didn’t like very much. Is The Signature of All Things fiction? I knew Gilbert had branched into fiction. Let me know your final opinion of All Things. And yes, so many blue covers – my favorite color btw 🙂

      1. Blue is my favorite color also. 💙I’m halfway through the signature of all things (fiction) and it’s quite different – intense and deep. I read and highly recommend Gilbert’s fiction book – The City of Girls.

    2. Hi Pam and Barbara, I am chiming in on “The Signature of all Things.” By now, you have likely finished reading this book, Pam. I thought it was excellent. It changed the way I think about things. Such as new ideas and inventions are ready to make an appearance in a certain time period, even when they come from different people and different parts of the world. I look forward to reading Barbara’s reviews of the above books. 🙂

  5. A nice array of book covers. I recently sent a pdf of my upcoming book to Library Journal as I found out that they aren’t accepting print copies or galleys for review due to the virus. Of course, it’s a long shot but I wanted to give it a try as the library market is so important. Enjoy your new reading!

  6. That sounds like a cool event! I’m so excited for that Linda Castillo book! I’m really disappointed that our library won’t get to have her on book tour this year. I’ve seen her several years in a row now and it’s always one of my favorite parts of the summer.

    1. I’m also still waiting. It was a little confusing at the conference because they made it sound like the ebooks were available for download, but I actually got redirected to NetGalley, which was fine, too. Hope I get The Switch. I just read The Flatshare and liked it!

  11. You may guess that Linda Castillo’s book cover caught my eye because of the Mennonite/Amish prayer veiling. A New York Times bestselling author I’ve not heard about. I guess I’d better catch up!

  12. It will be interesting to read your reviews and thoughts on these new books, Barbara. The only book I have heard about is “The Paris Children.” I have not read this book, yet.
