On this Memorial Day, it’s important to honor the men and women soldiers who lost their lives protecting our freedom. Here are three excellent books depicting war and sacrifice.

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Thank you for visiting.
Happy Memorial Day! This is a great post idea. I haven’t read any of these books, but I definitely want to try All Quiet on the Western Front someday.
I read it because my son had to read it for college so we had it. Definitely worth reading. Thanks for stopping by, Stephanie!
All excellent books.
Agreed – thank you for reading, Darlene.
Fantastic books!
Yes, they truly are! Thank you for reading and commenting, Jill. Sorry for the late reply!
Great choices and ones that I need to add to my ever increasing list! Hope you’re well my friend. X
We have something in common, Books and Bakes – the ever increasing list! Thank you for reading. All’s well here – hope you’re enjoying some nice weather. 🙂
You’re so good! 🧡💜💛💚
All classics, and I’m happy to say I’ve read all of them.
Hi Jan – these books stayed with me. Thank you for reading 🙂
I hope you’ve had a safe Memorial Day. Three perfect picks!
Hi Priscilla – thank you for reading and commenting. I agree – great books!
All good recommendations
Thank you, Derrick. 🙂
I’m tardy today, seeing this post on Tuesday. Still, I resonate with Farewell to Arms, recalling the back story to this book from a recent PBS documentary on Hemingway. You may have seen it, Barbara.
Hi Marian – I haven’t watched it yet – several of my co-workers have, though. Did you get to see the whole series? It’s definitely on my list. Thanks for reading and commenting, Marian. 🙂
Yes, I saw the whole series. I would be available now through PBS Passport. As you may guess, no happy ending.
Yes. Hemingway was a complicated person. Not exactly likeable in many ways, but I love his writing.
I agree – ALL excellent books!
Happy Memorial Day!
We’re of like minds, Donna. Thank you!
I hope you had a good memorial day, Barbara. I have read two of your three books presented here. I also read To the last man by Jeff Shaara which was more of a fictionalised retelling of this war, but so fascinating.
Hi Robbie – I’m going to have to look that one up. Thanks for the recommendation. I knew you had read A Farewell to Arms. Which of the other two have you read? Thanks for visiting!
Hi Barbara, I’ve read All Quiet on the Western Front.
Definitely a good one. I was apprehensive about Slaughterhouse Five. The title kind of scared me and I’d never read Vonnegut. I was so glad I did, though.
