Book Club Mom’s Blog WOES and Other Obsessions

I’ve recently discovered that followers are receiving emails with spam comments replying to comments they made on my blog. Arrrrrggggghhh! As much as I hate to close comments, I’ve been forced to do it on a couple posts. I’ve notified WordPress and they replied with the suggestion that I tweak the discussion settings on my blog.

I made some changes, including closing comments after 30 days and will no longer allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks). This recent article made some good arguments for turning them off.

So I apologize if you are receiving these emails. What a nusiance for you! I hope you’ll be patient with me as I figure things out.

If you are receiving these emails please contact me at bvitelli2009@gmail.com and tell me which post so I can work to shut it down from my end.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you’ll come back soon!

    1. Hi Ankur – thank you for checking in – I’m glad you haven’t received any spam emails connected to my blog. Let me know if that changes. Hope you’re having a great day!

  1. I haven’t received any. But I did limit the ability to comment on blogs older than 30 days. That will DEFINITELY cut down on my spam. It never occurred to me to do so. Thank you!

    1. Hi Colleen, thanks for checking in – I’m glad you haven’t received any emails. I’m hoping the changes I’ve made will reduce the spam problem. Hope you’re having a great day!

  2. Hi, Barb – I am sorry to read that you are going through this. I have received several of these spam comments to your blog in the last few days. So far, these spam comments have all been for recent posts.

    1. Hi Donna – thanks for checking in with me. I’m sorry you’ve received some spam comments. Let me know if they continue. I hope that by turning off the pingbacks and trackbacks, and by closing comments after 30 days (something I didn’t want to do), my spam will be under better control. Hope you’re either reading something good right now or off on a hike or cooking up something yummy in the kitchen! 😊

  3. Barbara, thanks for the link to the WP article on pingbacks and trackbacks. I was unaware of the downside of their use. I haven’t received any emails with spam comments.

    1. Hi Rosaliene – thank you for checking in! I’m glad you aren’t getting any emails. I hadn’t thought about the pingbacks and trackbacks but I think turning them off will help. Hope you’re having a great day!

      1. Barbara, just letting you know that, after I closed comments to my posts after 30 days, my spam mail has been drastically reduced. Thanks so much for bringing this detail to my attention 🙂

    1. Hi Jacqui – I’m glad you haven’t received any emails. I hope the changes I’ve made will at least tame the bots for now! Thank you for stopping by 🙂

  4. NO! How could this happen? I’m sorry and sense your frustration. I’ve never thought about closing pingbacks and trackbacks. Someone did suggest to me to stop using my phone for blogging. I’ve done so and I’m getting less spam. Also, it seems spiritually healthier to not have the ability to blog in my grasp 24/7.

    1. Hi Ally – I’ve only blogged once from my phone and that was when we had no power at the house and I went to the library where there was power. My fingers are crossed that I have at least won this battle with the bots, but I’m sure they will find a new way to get into my blog. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I don’t know that I’ve received any, but I have discovered that I can close comments on a post at any time under “Quick Edit.” No worries, Barb!

    1. Thank you, Marian – yes, there are easy ways to close comments, but I hate to do that. I will live with closing them after 30 days, though. I do think that turning off pingbacks and trackbacks will help the most. Thank you for stopping by!

    1. Hi Lynette – I’m glad you haven’t been barraged! Spam is very annoying, but it’s never going to go away. We just have to keep beating it down! Thank you for reading and commenting 🙂

  6. Ugh, annoying. I know what you’re talking about. I’ve been getting that for an About page on someone else’s blog but nothing spammy from yours, thankfully. Thanks for looking out for your readers!

    1. Hi Betsy – thanks for checking in. I’m glad you haven’t been getting spam emails. That’s weird that you are getting them connected to someone else’s About page. The internet is weird!

  7. How frustrating for you! I haven’t received any spam. For a long time I’ve had comments on my blog turn off after two weeks, and that greatly reduced the spam comments I had been getting. I hadn’t thought about restricting ping backs and the like. I’m going to look into that so thanks for sharing the tip!

    1. Hi Marie, thank you for stopping by. I did a YouTube video about all the spam I was getting and did a bunch of other stuff like creating a ridiculously long password generated by WP, setting up the 2-factor authentication and other things and for a few days my spam was under control. But it came back with a vengeance and I was getting close to 1000 a day! Since I turned off the pingbacks and trackbacks (yesterday) and closed comments after 30 days, I’ve received zero spam. Hope it lasts!

      1. Hi Marie – I’m still doing the 2-factor authentication. I’ve gotten used to it and you can do it without having to receive a text if you have the WP app on your phone. Still, it’s just another step to slow us down! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  8. I’ve been getting them from a couple of blogs but I just delete them. Don’t even worry about it. I’m sure WordPress will do something at some point too. Those who matter, don’t mind. Those who mind, don’t matter. X

    1. HI Charley, thank you for your patience! I think it’s a newer problem on WordPress and also think by turning off my pingbacks and trackbacks and closing comments after 30 days, I’ll eliminate a lot of the spam. I like your comment about those who matter don’t mind and those who mind, don’t matter 🧡🧡🧡

  9. Yes, that’s been happening to me. I’ll send you an email. It happened on your blog and one other one too. So odd! I think I’ll turn off ping backs too.

  10. This is WordPress’s newest glitch. If I put up a comment directly on a blog (meaning, not through the Reader), and it actually sticks, for some of them, I get emails telling me of replies to those comments. Even when I don’t check the box next to “Notify me of new comments via email.” Insane. Mind you, there are still some blogs where I can’t comment at all, and if I really want to say something, I have to go to that blog through the WP Reader and put my comment in that way. Plus, today, I found out that my work-around to not have to deal with the blocks has changed so that the classic mode is all spread out across the screen.

    1. Hi Davida – I agree it’s new to WordPress but I also blame the bots that continue to find ways to work their way into our online worlds. I was wondering if people were getting emails even though that hadn’t checked the box to notify them. Now I know they do! I hadn’t heard of the other problem you are having about commenting although I have to jump through hoops to comment on a blog through my phone. Like everything else, we have to just be patient, but I hate when it affects my online world. Thank you for reading and being brave enough to leave a comment! 😉

    1. Hi Lisa, I”m sorry you have gotten emails too. I hope that turning off pingbacks and trackbacks and closing comments after 30 days will at least diminish the spam, until the bots figure out a new way. Let me know if you continue to get them. Thank you and hope you’re reading a good book right now!

  11. Hi Barbara, WP is doing some weird things at the moment. There are blogs I can’t comment on using my WP account and I have to use Twitter. It is annoying. I hope you resolve this issue quickly. I am not effected.

    1. Thanks, Robbie, for checking in – I don’t think it’s just one issue. Since I’ve made changes, I received zero spam comments and I hope that’s also the case for those receiving emails. HOpe you’re having a great day!

  12. I haven’t received any either, Barbara, but I am receiving other’s comments on blogs where I left a comment. I thought maybe I accidentally checked a box to make this happen. But I wonder if it’s a WP glitch. My email inbox is inundated, but hopefully it’ll resolve soon. I’ve looked at my WP settings and everything is the same, so who knows! 🙂

    1. Hi Lauren – thanks for letting me know. The bots are relentless and are taking advantage of a WP vulnerability. I hope you’re able to resolve your email situation soon. Since I turned off pingbacks and trackbacks, I have not received any spam comments on my blog. I don’t know if that would help your email problem, since I have not been receiving spam emails. Take care. I hope you are having a nice long weekend!

    1. Yes, all good news! Since I’ve turned off pingbacks and trackbacks and closed comments after 30 days, I have no spam and I haven’t heard of any email problems since so I’m happy! Thanks for the visit 🙂
