Book Club Mom’s Author Update: News from JP McLean

Author name: JP McLean

Book to feature: Blood Mark

News to share: I’m pleased to share the news that Blood Mark, the first in a brand-new paranormal thriller series, will be released on October 19, 2021.

What if your lifelong curse is the only thing keeping you alive? Abandoned at birth, life has always been a battle for Jane Walker. She and her best friend, Sadie, spent years fighting to survive Vancouver’s cutthroat underbelly. That would have been tough enough without Jane’s mysterious afflictions: an intricate pattern of blood-red birthmarks that snake around her body and vivid, heart-wrenching nightmares that feel so real she wakes up screaming.

After she meets the first man who isn’t repulsed by her birthmarks, Jane thinks she might finally have a chance at happiness. Her belief seems confirmed as the birthmarks she’s spent her life so ashamed of magically begin to disappear. Yet, the quicker her scarlet marks vanish, the more lucid and disturbing Jane’s nightmares become—until it’s impossible to discern her dreams from reality, and Jane comes to a horrifying realization:

The nightmares that have plagued her since childhood are actually visions of real people being stalked by a deadly killer. And all this time, her birthmarks have been the only things protecting her from becoming his next victim.

Brief bio and other books: JP (Jo-Anne) McLean has received honourable mentions from the Whistler Independent Book Awards and the Victoria Writers Society. She lives with her husband on Denman Island, which is nestled between the coast of British Columbia and Vancouver Island. Her other titles include the seven-book series, The Gift Legacy.

Book Club Mom’s Author Update: News from Bruce W. Bishop

Author name: Bruce W. Bishop

Book to feature: Uncommon Sons

News to share: Bruce has released the interlinked novel to his successful debut late in 2020 with Unconventional Daughters. The new book, Uncommon Sons, re-introduces the characters of Marc and Eva in 1935-36 as they are confronted with two mysterious deaths at the hotel where Marc works as a manager. Uncommon Sons is a page-turning tale of sexual identity, systemic racism, familial obligations, workplace pressures, and the bonds of love and friendship prior to World War II. It’s the perfect late summer ‘beach read’ that further explores what happens when adults are not what and who they are expected to be.

The book can be purchased through Amazon or Rakuten Kobo.

Book Club Mom’s Author Update: News from Pamela S. Wight

Author name: Pamela S. Wight

Book to feature: Flashes of Life: True Tales of the Extraordinary Ordinary

News to share: Flashes of Life is a fun “flash memoir” that includes light-hearted short stories about the (ordinary) wonderful aspects of life: kids, parents, grandparents, dogs, even plants. Watercolor-washed black and white photos begin each section on subjects such as “Fun Family Drama,” “Relationships,” For the Dogs,” and “Time Off.”

Wonderful 5-star reviews include comments like these from blogger/author Jill Weatherholt:

“Being a long-time follower of author Pamela Wight’s blog, I was so excited to get my hands on her latest release. This wonderful collection of true short stories is one you never want to end. For several weeks after it was delivered, I leisurely devoured each story outdoors on our patio. The wonderful thing about it, I felt like my friend, Pam was sitting with me sharing her stories as we watch the hummingbirds snatch sips of nectar from the Salvia. I loved so many of these stories, but one that really touched my heart was ‘A Renewal. I highly recommend this emotional collection.”

The 140-page softback, designed beautifully, is a perfect gift for a special woman in your life: mom, sister, daughter, friend, and especially, to yourself.

Pamela writes for children and adults as a multi-genre author. Her romantic suspense novels The Right Wrong Man and Twin Desires are available as softback and e-book on Amazon. Her two hard-cover illustrated children’s books – Birds of Paradise and Molly Finds Her Purr – are sold at Borgo Publishing and on Amazon. Flashes of Life is available on Amazon and through Borgo Publishing as softback and e-book.

Website and social media links: Pamela writes a weekly popular blog called Roughwighting. She can be found on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

Book Club Mom’s Author Update: Tammie Painter

Author name: Tammie Painter

Book to feature: The Undead Mr. Tenpenny, The Cassie Black Trilogy Book One

News to share: I’m thrilled to announce the launch of The Undead Mr. Tenpenny, the first book in my new series, The Cassie Black Trilogy. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but the novel — which is full of dark humor — first came to mind while I was waiting for my grandmother’s funeral to start.

The book begins when Cassie Black, who works at a funeral home, finds her “clients” waking up.

Cassie thinks she has the problem under control, until her latest client (Mr. Tenpenny) insists he’s been murdered and claims Cassie’s responsible thanks to a wicked brand of magic she’s  been exposed to. The only way for Cassie to get her life back to normal is to tame her magic and uncover Mr. Tenpenny’s true killer.

Simple right? Of course not. Because while Cassie works on getting her newly-acquired magic sorted, she’s blowing up kitchens, angering an entire magical community, and discovering her past is more closely tied to Busby Tenpenny than she could have ever imagined.

The novel earned some happy kudos from a branch of the American PEN Women when it won first place in their novel excerpt contest, and again from Apple who selected it as one of their Most Anticipated Books of 2021.

But what’s truly brought a smile to my face are the responses from my early reviewers who have loved the characters, the humor, and the overall premise of the book.

Anyway, If you like contemporary fantasy with snarky humor, unforgettable characters, piles of pastries, and a little paranormal mystery, you’ll love the Cassie Black Trilogy…a fish-out-of-water tale that takes you from the streets of Portland to the Tower of London.

Brief bio and other books: I’m an award-winning author who turns wickedly strong tea into imaginative fiction. With a creative and curious mind, my stories run the gamut from historical fantasy to modern-day paranormal, and magical realism to humor-laced dark tales.

Besides the new trilogy, I’ve got two, complete historical fantasy series under my belt: The Osteria Chronicles and Domna, plus a fair number of short stories.

Book Club Mom’s Author Update: Karen Haid

Author name: Karen Haid

Genre: Non-fiction culture/travel

Books: Calabria: The Other Italy, Basilicata: Authentic Italy

News: In these times of restricted travel, I feel very fortunate to have had the many wonderful experiences abroad that have enriched my life and on which I can now reflect as I remain close to home. While disappointed with having had to cancel the tours of my fledgling travel company, Karen’s Travel LLC, I used the time to work with my designer for the cover and interior of my new book and I am very pleased to announce that I have recently published my second book Basilicata: Authentic Italy!

Reflecting back 12 years ago, when I moved to the region in the toe of the Italian boot, I would never have imagined that my 4-year Southern Italian immersion would have resulted in two books and a blog about the area. After Calabria: The Other Italy, My Italian Blog and related social media pages, I turned my attention to another lesser-known area of Italy and began my on-the-ground exploration and extensive associated research of Basilicata.

Why Calabria? Why Basilicata? Visitors to Italy complain of the crowded trails of the Cinque Terre and a mobbed Venice. Why not travel to a place with a little elbow room? Not to mention where the locals outnumber the guests. In Calabria and Basilicata, I have often felt as though I had the whole place to myself. Just me and the locals.

In Basilicata, I traversed Mediterranean beaches and Alpine forests, visited medieval castles and modest homes, attended folkloric festivals and sampled earthy local cuisine, as I uncovered the past and the present, from pre-Greek to the story of emigration that continues today. My writing mixes personal experience, history, culture and contemporary social topics in a travelogue format. What’s the genre? Exactly what all the experts advise against: difficult to categorize.

If you would like to journey to the rocky region in the heart of the Italian south, to a land where ancient pagan rites live alongside those of the Catholic Church, world-class wine washes down edible hyacinth bulbs, zip-lines parallel old mule trails, and the air is infused with the ideals of Roman poets and brigands, check out Basilicata: Authentic Italy.

You may just be curious as to what it’s like to sleep in an ancient cave in the historic Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and last year’s European Capital of Culture.

Book: The Healing Power of Girlfriends: How to Create Your Best Life Through Female    Connection

News: In my work as a psychotherapist working with women’s mental health issues, I often get asked “How do I make new friends?” The desire to make new friends and nurture existing friendships is almost ubiquitous. Especially now during the pandemic when so many people feel alone, disconnected, isolated, a circle of friends to support us, encourage us, and share life with is vital.

My book, The Healing Power of Girlfriends: How to Create Your Best Life Through Female Connection, equips women with ideas and practical tips on how to make new friends and develop deeper bonds of friendship.

It’s very exciting to share the news that my book has won three awards since its release in March 2019!

  • Gold award in Dan Poynter’s Global Ebook Awards in the Nonfiction, Self-Help category
  • Bronze award in the Nonfiction Book Awards
  • Bronze award in the Living Now Book Awards in the Nonfiction, Self-Help category

It is my hope that many more women will benefit from the tips in the book and come together in an even stronger bond of friendship as we weather the storms of life.

Book: My Trilogy : The Nine Lives of Gila
We Don’t Talk About That
Flight Into The Unknown
Set Sail for Life After 50

News: My Trilogy: The Nine Lives of Gila

Gila – me, had an idyllic childhood on a small farm up to the beginning of WWII. I lived my first ten years under the Nazis; nothing much happened in our little world. When my aunt from Berlin came after the bombing to ask for cow manure to grow tomatoes on her balcony, I realized that ‘war’ was real. The first escapees arriving from East Prussia talked about the Russians following them, burning, plundering and raping. Evacuees from Berlin told how the flames from phosphor bombs burned people to death. The Russian army arrived in February 1945; I watched horrible atrocities. When the Russians left, the Polish army came and evicted us. We had 10 minutes to get out of our house. With thousands of people, we walked weeks towards the Oder river, the new border of Germany-Poland. No idea where to go, sleeping under the stars, even surviving diphtheria, and a few months later, typhoid fever.

For the next ten years, I grew up a teenager in East Germany. I had to fight for my education but succeeded in becoming a Physical Education teacher. I had not joined the Communist Party, mandatory for teachers. My principal insisted – unless I ‘sleep’ with him or report me. My dad advised me to escape to West Germany. My east education meant nothing in the west; I started from zero. An unwanted affair with a person in power almost drove me to suicide. I longed to get away, get out of Germany. Away from a stalker. I covered the first thirty years in my memoir, We Don’t Talk About That.

Through an advert, I started corresponding with a Canadian man with a child in Vancouver. His well-to-do German parents smartly manipulated me into marrying him before I knew him. Just weeks after arriving in Canada, I had a rude awakening. With limited English and all my earthly belongings in a container on the high seas, I had no chance to leave. After many trials and tribulations, I was successful in business and a welcome guest on radio stations across North America. Flight Into The Unknown is the story of my immigration.

Now I’m busy writing the finale to my adventurous life, Set Sail for Life After 50.
