Blogging since when? 2011

What’s your story? When I published my first novel, Dance of Souls, in 2011, I knew it was important to have what we call an “author platform.” At the time, a blog was a necessity. Now, six years later, some people argue that you don’t need a blog any more since you can publish your ideas and opinions on sites like LinkedIn and Medium. But I like being able to completely control my content and presentation. In the beginning, I blogged a lot about the challenges of being an indie author. Now that I’ve published one book and have another scheduled for publication, I write about more general subjects, though still with a focus on art and literature. My most popular posts have been the ones where I’ve opened up personally about something going on in my life, like one I wrote about dealing with anxiety.

What types of blogs do you follow? I follow many blogs by people who offer advice on writing and marketing. I also follow a couple of great mindfulness blogs and I recently discovered Vox Populi, described as “a community of writers, artists, teachers and activists who share a vision of what American life is and what it could be.” They post a lot of poetry, which is quite refreshing!

Early bird or night owl? Definitely early bird. I try to do all my creative stuff before 11 a.m. and reserve the afternoon for activities that don’t require laser-like attention, since, as I get older, my brain power wanes considerably after about 3 p.m. I treat blogging like a job. I’ve been a freelancer for more than 20 years, so I’m fairly disciplined about deadlines—which is very helpful in supporting my own writing.

Coffee or tea? Tea, definitely: loose leaf. My current favorite is Early Grey green from Ahmad Tea, which I buy by the pound.

Most recent binge watch: “White Collar,” originally on USA Network, now available on Amazon. I love the two main characters, an FBI agent and his ex-con sidekick.

More about Audrey: Audrey Kalman writes literary fiction with a dark edge, often about what goes awry when human connection is missing from our lives. She is the author of two novels and numerous short stories, which have appeared in literary journals ranging from Pithead Chapel to Sixfold. She edited two editions of the Fault Zone anthology of California Writers and serves as VP/Speakers for the SF-Peninsula Branch of the California Writers Club. She lives in northern California with her husband, two children, and two cats, and has a day job (actually more like a middle-of-the-night job) as a birth doula. She is working on another novel. Or two.

I love character-driven novels, especially those structured as interlocking stories and/or multiple points of view. Some favorites: Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge, Emma Donoghue’s Room, Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed, William Faulkner’s Light in August.

Blogmaster:  Jan M. Flynn

Blog name: JanMFlynn.net

Type of blog: writing and life in general (plus horses)

Where in the world?  Napa Valley, California

Blogging since when?  March, 2016

What’s your story? One of my favorite quotes is, “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” I love the exchange of ideas possible through blogging, my fave form of social media. And since I’m a writer (historical and speculative fiction as well as middle grade and I loves me some good short stories), naturally I want to connect with readers as well as other writers.

What types of blogs do you follow?  As with my writing, my tastes are eclectic. Of course I follow book blogs, but if someone writes with a clever or fresh or inspiring viewpoint on almost any topic, I’m in. Plus, horses.

Early bird or night owl? A weekend without blogging is like . . . well, I can’t remember since I haven’t had one for over a year.

Coffee or tea? Coffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffee. Then wine. Then tea.

Most recent binge watch or other obsession: Do I have to choose just one? Because, “The Last Kingdom” + “Handmaid’s Tale” + “The Son” . . . and now there’s “Glow”!

Blogmaster:  Amy L Sauder

Blog name:  Amy L. Sauder – Creations: from Creations: from “Once Upon” to “Ever After”  – AmyLSauder.wordpress.com

Type of blog: Creative living

Where in the world?  USA

Blogging since when?  2014

What’s your story? I started a blog to have my own place to document my creative journey “from ‘once upon’ to ‘ever after.’” Sharing my creative life, in mediums that I’m comfortable and confident in, and in mediums that I fumble through in my klutzy way.

What types of blogs do you follow?  Bloggers on creative living or with a creative voice. Some talk about their life, some about fashion, some about writing or reading or story, some share photography, and some share their heart.

Early bird or night owl?  Early bird, however I write in the evening. I get an early start to my day so I can have other obligations finished by evening for blogging. I usually schedule blogs in chunks so I can more readily devote my evenings to other creative endeavors.

Coffee or tea?  Heavily creamered coffee or most preferably a chai latte.

Most recent binge watch or other obsession:  My current guilty pleasure is Rizzoli and Isles – it’s my closest alternative to Gilmore Girls because I can’t get enough of the girl drama <3.

Whats your story? I had a daily habit of freewriting, and at some point I thought it made sense to put some of the better pieces into some kind of format that people might read. I showed three of them to a writer friend, who said something along the lines of, “Publish them on a blog. Your family and friends will probably be your only readers, but do it for fun until it’s no longer fun.” She suggested the name, Squirrels in the Doohickey, based on one of the pieces.

What types of blogs do you follow? humor

Early bird or night owl? Good question. Goooooood question. If I’m on top of things, I’ll freewrite every morning before work, find the best of the bunch, and rewrite/edit it on the weekend. The reality is, I bang something out on Thursday evening, rewrite it on Saturday, edit and post it on Sunday.

Coffee or tea? Tea. Herbal.

Most recent binge watch or other obsession: I’ve been obsessed with reading Young Adult fiction lately. There are some wonderful YA authors, and I’m noodling a novel rewrite that’s in that genre.

Blog name:  giselleroeder.com

Type of blog:  History of WWII, Travel, Life in general, Adoption, interesting people, Health & Lifestyle, Books including my own, Love, Seniors and more.

Where in the world?  Canada

Blogging since when?  2014

What’s your story?  My book We Don’t Talk About That made a splash after publishing, was front page news in 2014 and I was advised to be present on social media. I have a webmaster who set up a website. After I learned a bit more I enjoyed posting my stories. I also belong to a Writer’s Group and the stories I write there have to do with my life experiences and I wanted to share! It is actually my main drive, to SHARE! I am told that my blogs are not just entertaining but always somehow educational. That’s my aim.  And, to make people THINK!

What types of blogs do you follow?  About new books of every genre, lifestyle, book writing & marketing blogs since there is so much to learn, travel, photography, animals, relationships. I enjoy reading about personal experiences of other bloggers.

Early bird or night owl?  My best time are quiet evenings. Often I get up in the middle of the night to write. Not just blogs, also working on my next book.

Coffee or tea?  Midmorning I have what I call “the second cup” – it’s the water run-through a second time on a used Keurig cup. It looks like tea but still has some coffee taste and is strong enough for me. Black tea rarely, but herb and green tea. My main hydration comes from water mixed with juice, cranberry, grape or apple juice.

Most recent binge watch or other obsession:  Chocolate! Oh yahh, I have to watch that! At least I look for the dark one. But I also watch the scale and know when to stop.

Who’s That Blogger? A.S. Akkalon

whos-that-blogger

Blogmaster:  A.S. Akkalon (Alecia)

Blog name: A.S. Akkalon – Fantasy Author at asakkalon.com

Type of blog: Author blog. That is, I’m an (as yet unpublished) author, and it’s my blog. I give bad advice on all kinds of matters, such as how to use internet marketing techniques to write a successful job application, share random silliness, such as why you should get romantically involved with a dinosaur, and occasionally talk about reading and writing books.

Where in the world?  Middle Earth, aka New Zealand

Blogging since when? October 2016

What’s your story? I got serious about writing and publishing fantasy books, and decided I needed a log cabin to call my own in the wilderness of the internet. Right now my blog has mostly helped me make friends with a wonderful group of writers from all nooks of the planet, but in the future I hope it will be a place where people who enjoy my books (please let there be people who enjoy my books!) can come to get to know me personally.

What types of blogs do you follow? I follow a lot of different types of blogs for different reasons: the blogs of my online friends because I care what they have to say no matter what they’re talking about; advice blogs on writing craft, publishing, and book marketing to supplement the millions of books I read on these subjects; blogs of other writers to get insight into their writing and publishing journeys; and humorous and random blogs that make me smile, because smiling is even better than chocolate.

Early bird or night owl? I’m an early bird, meaning my brain switches off at 9pm, but on weekdays I blog in the evening because I have other things that have to happen first, like working to earn money to pay for my internet connection.

Coffee or tea? Don’t tempt me, I’m trying to cut back!

Most recent binge watch or other obsession: Burn Notice, because it’s funny and clever, and because spies!

Who’s That Blogger? Narin Reads

whos-that-blogger

Blogmaster:  Narin

Blog name: Narin Reads – narinreads.com

Type of blog: Predominantly book reviews and experiences of museums/exhibitions/culture and heritage in general – I’ve just started publishing a monthly newsletter about museums in London too!

Where in the world?  London, UK

Blogging since when? I began the blog in August 2016 but I’ve been blogging properly since December.

What’s your story?  I’ve always tried blogging and never succeeded, I always had other responsibilities and thought ‘oh what’s the point?’ and gave up. I started this specific blog after coming across a list of forty two books that all book lovers should apparently read – I’d read three. It was at that point I realized that I’d lost a part of me as I’d grown up and wanted to get to know the younger me again. Reading this list of books and writing reviews on them, I believed, would help me in this. It has, it’s helped a lot!

What types of blogs do you follow? It varies, if I like the content then I’ll follow it. Lots of book review blogs, of course as well as political commentary/opinion and photography. Anything cooking/vegan related I’ll follow too.

Early bird or night owl? (how do you make time for blogging?) I blog whenever I can. If I’m not reading on the train then I’m typing on my phone, at work when I get a moment, at home in bed… basically, when and if I can fit it in I will.

Coffee or tea? Black coffee all day, everyday – literally all day

Most recent binge watch: I don’t watch much TV but I am a massive fan of The Last Kingdom. It’s just started its second series here in the UK – I love Brida, she’s definitely one of my favourite characters on TV. I can promise you that I’ll be catching up on Switched at Birth at some point in the near future too…

Who’s That Blogger? Norah Colvin

whos-that-blogger
Blogmaster
:  Norah Colvin

Blog names:  Norah Colvin and readilearn

Type of blog:  NorahColvin: education focus; readilearn: early childhood education teaching ideas and resources

Where in the world?  Australia

Blogging since when?  Norah Colvin August 2013; readilearn August 2016

What’s your story?  When I started thinking about self-publishing stories and teaching resources, I did a lot of online research and attended many writing seminars. The collective intelligence promoted blogging as the primary avenue for writers to make connections and establish audience, and insisted on the importance of doing so prior to publication. Social media was also important, but secondary to blogging. At that time, I didn’t know much about social media and had no idea about blogging. Some of the course presenters suggested bloggers to follow, so I quickly got started and developed an understanding of what blogging was about. I was then keen to get my own blog started, and haven’t looked back. While I began with a particular purpose in mind, and that purpose is definitely still there, what keeps me going is the feeling of community, of connection with others, that I have established through my blogging with my blogging friends.

What types of blogs do you follow? My choice of blogs to follow is quite eclectic, but reflective of my interest in education. Education is rather a broad topic after all. I read blogs with any connection to education including early childhood education, children’s literature, psychology, neuroscience, general science, writing, and literature. It is impossible to list all the types of blogs I read. But the ones I follow are those that engage in discourse, who are interested in developing a relationship and being part of an online community. I am very fortunate that I have met many wonderful bloggers who fit this description. A few years ago I coined a phrase to describe us: S.M.A.G. Society of Mutual Admiration and Gratitude. Anyone can join. You just need to be supportive, kind and encouraging.

Early bird or night owl? I’d love to be a night owl and an early bird, but my candle doesn’t stand straight if I now try to burn it at both ends. I am fortunate that I no longer need to work full time for another employer so, although it doesn’t actually feel like it with the schedule I create for myself, I have the luxury of a little more time to devote to my writing. I have maintained a schedule of posting twice a week since I began blogging in 2013. Since the launch of readilearn last year, one of those posts is now published on the readilearn blog, and reposted on NorahColvin.com. I prioritise writing the blog posts and creating the teaching resources which are explained in the readilearn post, so this generally comes first in the morning – but not too early; usually after breakfast and housework if I can’t think of a good excuse to delay the housework for one more day (week or month).

Coffee or tea? Peppermint tea for morning tea, coffee after dinner.

Most recent binge watch: My grandchildren playing! 😊

Early bird or night owl? Early Bird – I’m one of those people who wake up cheerful and bursting with energy.

Who’s That Blogger? Sarah Brentyn

whos-that-blogger

Blogmaster:  Sarah Brentyn

Blog names: Lemon Shark and my fiction blog, Lemon Shark Reef

Type of blog: I suppose Lemon Shark is an eclectic blog focusing mostly on my thoughts about life and writing and surviving the aforementioned.

Where in the world?  Ooh! I know this one! “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?” Score ten for the Shark.

Blogging since when? I don’t really keep track of these things. However, there’s a handy list on the side of my blog so, with just a peek, I can see I’ve been blogging at Lemon Shark since…2014.

What’s your story? What is my story? “It was a dark and stormy night…” Damn! Taken. My blogging story is odd. Why? Because, although I have a blog (two, actually, I have two and, yes, I know that’s not a “good idea” or whatever but I have a fiction blog called Lemon Shark Reef) and…where was I? Right, although I have a blog (two!), I don’t consider myself a blogger. So that’s the odd I was referring to: I’m participating in a series on bloggers and I don’t think of myself as one.

What types of blogs do you follow? I follow all sorts of blogs: personal, travel, education, writing, book reviews, movie reviews, poetry, photography…

Early bird or night owl? Owl. I am definitely an owl. I’ve always been an owl. I love owls. (Now I’m just trying to see how many times I can fit the word “owl” into this answer.) Owl. Is that six? And, wow, I would love to sleep during the day. Like an owl. Seven.

Coffee or tea? Both. Coffee: I like my sugar with coffee and cream. (Credit: Beastie Boys and, then, me) Tea: I don’t drink “tea”. I know. I just said I did. I drink “herbal tea” which is a misnomer. It has no tea leaves in it so, technically, it’s not tea. I’m done. Apologies.

Most recent binge watch (or other obsession): Alias. (Just started binge-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Again.)

Cheers!
