Who’s That Indie Author? K.C. Tansley

whos-that-indie-author

Author name:  K.C. Tansley

Genre:  YA Time Travel Mysteries

Books:  The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts, The Girl Who Saved Ghosts

Bio:  K.C Tansley lives with her warrior lapdog, Emerson, and two quirky golden retrievers on a hill somewhere in Connecticut. She tends to believe in the unbelievables–spells, ghosts, time travel–and writes about them.

Never one to say no to a road trip, she’s climbed the Great Wall twice, hopped on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, and danced the night away in the dunes of Cape Hatteras. She loves the ocean and hates the sun, which makes for interesting beach days.

As Kourtney Heintz, she also writes award winning cross-genre fiction for adults.

Favorite thing about being a writer:  Nailing an emotional beat. After struggling with a scene for weeks, there’s usually a moment when it all comes together and I feel like I’ll hit the readers with just the right mix of visceral reactions, internal thoughts, and body language for them to experience what my character feels.

Biggest challenge as an indie author:  Selling books remains the hardest part of being an indie author.

Favorite booksCity of Glass by Cassandra Clare, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead, Splintered by A.G. Howard, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Who’s That Indie Author? Sarah Kowalski

whos-that-indie-author

Author name:  Sarah Kowalski

Genre:  Memoir

Book:  Motherhood Reimagined: When Becoming A Mother Doesn’t Go As Planned

Bio:  Sarah Kowalski is an author, life coach, fertility doula and former attorney. Through her one on one coaching, support groups, and writing, she is redefining what it means to be a mother so she can inspire others to cultivate the love, courage and tenacity it takes to conceive and raise a child by unconventional means. As a single mother who battled fertility to get pregnant, she is a go to guide for women who are contemplating single motherhood, having fertility issues, raising donor conceived children or navigating life as single mothers. When she’s not writing, coaching women, or chasing her very curious three-year old son, she can be found doing Qigong or other mind/body practices, cooking or dancing.

Favorite thing about being a writer:  I love writing as a vehicle to make sense of my inner landscape and thought process.  Once I’ve reached clarity, I feel inspired to share what I’ve learned in hopes of shedding wisdom on another. I hope that by finding clarity, I can guide others and help them feel less alone in their own experiences. My writing also feels like a calling to change the narrative around infertility and unconventional paths to motherhood.  By bolding sharing my story, I hope others will also be courageous, ending the shame and secrecy around these topics.

Biggest challenge as an indie author:  Finding time to write substantive pieces such as my memoir, while balancing the need to write short blog posts for my business and for marketing.

Favorite booksWild: Sheryl Strayed; State of Wonder: Ann Patchett ; Saving Fish From Drowning: Amy Tan; House of Spirits: Isabel Allende

Who’s That Indie Author? Robert DeAngelis

whos-that-indie-author

Author name:  Robert DeAngelis

Genre:  Fiction

BookAnno Domini

Bio:  I have worked in a variety of Social Services positions during my career. The last fifteen years I have worked in Student Services in a public school system. I am married with two children. Hobbies include old cars and fast motorcycles.

Favorite thing about being a writer: Expressing interesting thoughts in a way that may be relevant and compelling to your readers.

Biggest challenge as an indie author: It’s a rat race. Hurdles and challenges are never-ending. The process forces you to decide just how important to you, the delivery of your story really is.

Favorite books: The Human Comedy by William Saroyan, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, The Iliad by Homer, The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. So many though…I listed the first titles that emerged into my awareness.

Who’s That Indie Author? John W. Howell

Author name
:  John W. Howell

Genre:  Fiction Thrillers

BooksMy GRL, His Revenge, Our Justice

my-grl     his-revenge     our-justice

Bio:  John began his writing as a full-time occupation after an extensive business career. His specialty is thriller fiction novels, but John also writes poetry and short stories.  His first book, My GRL, introduces the exciting adventures of the book’s central character, John J. Cannon. The second Cannon novel, His Revenge, continues the adventure, while the final book in the trilogy, Our Justice, launched in September 2016.  All books are available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle editions. John lives in Port Aransas, Texas with his wife and their spoiled rescue pets.

Favorite thing about being a writer: My favorite thing about being a writer is being allowed to be responsible for the quality of my work. I do not have to rely on others in bringing a project to conclusion. To be able to work hard and to be dedicated to the task to its finish is highly rewarding.

Biggest challenge as an indie author:  The biggest challenge is reaching readers. In today’s indie environment there are about 4000 books published each day. Rising above this population and being chosen to be read is a daunting task. It is especially hard if there are not unlimited funds available for promotion.

Favorite book:  My favorite book out of thousands of favorites is On the Beach by Neville Shute. It was the first book I could remember reading where the ending was not “classically” happy. I was stunned by the circumstances and the quality of the writing. The book deals with the world is ending due to nuclear war and the last humans are living in Australia waiting for their inevitable fate.

Who’s That Indie Author? Elizabeth A. Havey

Elizabeth Havey

Author name: Elizabeth A. Havey

Genre: Women’s Fiction

Book: A Mother’s Time Capsule, Short Stories about Motherhood

A Mother's Time CapsuleBio: A former teacher of English and a registered nurse, I attended the Iowa Summer Writing Workshops, working with instructors including David Payne and Elizabeth Strout. My work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Better Homes and Gardens and literary magazines. I have also published CEUs for nursing in Nurseweek. In 2015, Foreverland Press published my collection of stories, A MOTHER’S TIME CAPSULE. I blog at Boomer Highway and I am a member of She Writes and Women’s Fiction Writers Association (WFWA). One surprising thing about me, I co-wrote MIAMI INK: Marked for Greatness.

Favorite thing about being a writer: the ability to create a place, a world filled with characters that speak to me and help me tell stories that I could have lived or stories I will never live. The power of imagination gets me to the keyboard.

Biggest challenge as an Indie author: getting the word out. There are many talented writers offering their work today. Writing and publishing my novels will help me rise above this crowded place. It’s a challenge with great potential.

Favorite book: There are too many to name, but the first that comes to mind is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s THE GREAT GATSBY, a classic that tells the American story, uses beautiful language and was not immediately welcomed by readers. Sometimes the best work lies fallow, but once it’s discovered, watch out.

Who’s That Indie Author? David Meredith

David Meredith

Author name
:  David Meredith

Genre:  Fantasy/Romance/Sci-fi/YA/NA

BookThe Reflections of Queen Snow White

The Reflections of Queen Snow White

Bio:  David Meredith is a writer and educator originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. He received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from East Tennessee State University, in Johnson City, Tennessee as well as a Tennessee State Teaching license. He is currently a doctoral student in Educational Leadership. On and off, he spent nearly a decade, from 1999-2010 teaching English in Northern Japan, but currently lives with his wife and three children in the Nashville Area where he continues to write and teach English.

Favorite thing about being a writer:  I like telling stories that make people feel something. Whether it’s anger, fear, sadness, or amusement I want to provoke an authentic emotional response in my readers. When I can do that; when I read a review that says “I cried” or “I laughed out loud” it makes me feel like I did my job.

Biggest challenge as an indie author: Certainly getting recognized. With the advent of the word processor and Kindle Direct Publishing anybody can hang out their author shingle and they do – producing a veritable deluge of Indy works. It’s a challenge to get your work noticed in the midst of the flood.

Favorite book: The Dragonbone Chair – Tad Williams and Shogun – James Clavell

Author name: Donna A. Ford

Genre: History/Biography/Inspirational

Books: Miracle of the Call – Twentieth Century Heroes and Heroines
Concord Sage – Ralph Waldo Emerson Life and Times

Miracle of the Call.png     Concord Sage

Bio: Donna A. Ford has spent twenty plus years in the corporate world as a technical writer. Miracle of the Call is her third published book. Her own miracle call is given in the book. Ford lives in New England and enjoys reading biographies and giving them to her nine grandchildren.

Her mission is: uncovering history through biographies.

Favorite thing about being a writer: I have loved to write ever since I was a teen. How wonderful to get paid to do what I love.

Biggest challenge as an indie author: Marketing myself and my books; an introvert nature from my maternal side conflicts with the extravert nature from my paternal side.

Favorite book: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I envy anyone who has yet to read them for the first time.
